Jo Jo's Pizza, the new King of Richmond's NY Slice

There two different ways to get pizza…GOOD pizza. You can order a nice pizza pie or you can stop off at a local joint and grab a couple slices and a soda.

The latter, is always a painless, quick process, but you often don’t get to experience the restaurant’s best pizza the way it was meant to be consumed. Single slices are often left out up to 20-30 minutes at a time and then thrown back into the oven for a couple minutes to reheat.

Generally, pizza is resilient enough to still retain its best qualities even when served in this manner…especially at Jo Jo’s Pizza on 12th and Main St. The absolute best pizza by the slice in the city.

Jo Jo’s caters to the business lunch crowd in downtown Richmond so you won’t find this place open past 5pm on weekdays, and I don’t believe they are open on weekends.

By the slice, the pizza is fantastic.  I couldn’t snap a shot of the underside of the crust, but they definitely cook this all the way through.  These big New York slices don’t droop or have any tip-sag at all.  The crust is the perfect blend of crispy exterior with a chewy interior.  This is something that no other pizza places around here can seem to get right.

The sauce is nothing to write home about, but does its job.  Not overly sweet nor spicy at all.  The cheese is great, and the pizza is topped with the right kind of spices that come standard.  No need to add anything from the various shakers on each table.

Yes, surprisingly there are spice shakers on every table.  No scrounging around for your Parmesan here.

And the deal is pretty great.  $4.99 for two slices and a fountain drink.  And it doesn’t matter what slice you get, it’s always $4.99.  Today, they had the choice of cheese, pepperoni, sausage and onions, and I think something with peppers on it.  They don’t charge you extra for this deal, and they don’t restrict you to cheese only.  Anything goes.

It’s always nice seeing this sticker in a pizza joint.

  • JoJo’s is a lot like Cafe Ole, surpassing expectations for that select group of people who find themselves in the few square blocks of Richmond’s downtown during weekday lunchtime. For the rest of us, their excellence is just out of reach.

I think it’s important that you said best NY Style slice “in the city.” For my money, the best slice is at Capriccio’s on Broad, in the TJ Maxx shopping center. Same deal as JoJo’s with the sauce being kinda plain, maybe sweet, but the heavenliness is the interplay between uberthin crispy crust and just the right amount of cheese.

  • thanks! Ive been meaning to check out Capriccio’s but I honestly never get out to the west end, and I typically avoid it. But Andy and I have definitely heard good things!
