DaVinci's, Brooklyn Park

Just when we think we’re running out of new pizza parlors to visit, we get the word of promising pie joints.  Sometimes in not so promising areas.

A friend of mine hints at a place she’s heard people talking about in a particularly crummy area of Northside along Brooklyn Park called DaVinci’s.  The place is a take-out only, traditional pizza and subs, hole in the wall type of pizza joint.

The pizza?  Pretty damn on point.

First thing’s first, DaVinci’s has a pretty good deal on slices and drinks.  About $5.5o will get you two slices, each with two toppings, and a fountain soda.  I’d say thats pretty fair.

As we ordered, one of the pizzaiolos told me he was making our pizzas fresh.  Since the three of us ordered two slices each, they were able to just go ahead and bake a fresh pie, which is worth tons of points in my book.

We sat on the curb of the place like little kids with nothing better to do on a Friday night.  I opened my little box to a smile on my face.  The pizza looks great.  A perfect color which hints at the chef’s knowledge how long one should bake a pizza.  Golden cheese with accompanying burn and great looking crust, with an appropriate amount of oven blistering.

Just looking at this image makes me eager to return

The taste however, is not as good as the slices look.   The crust looked like it would have a favorable amount of crunch with some chewiness, but the entirety of the bottom was soft.  The crust ends were delicious however, a tiny bit crispy and plenty of soft chew.

The mozzarella is very good.  No overpowering flavors, a decent amount of grease, the cheese pulls nicely as you tear through the slice.

Initially I was disappointed with the sauce.  I felt like there wasn’t enough flavor but I eventually attributed that to the entire pizza in general.  The sauce, when you get a bite with a nice amount, was tangy and very authentic.  You can tell DaVinci’s probably does not use cheap tomato sauce, but fresh roasted tomatoes.

I think the pizza could use a bit more sauce and it’d be a ton better.  Even still, this pizza rocks and you should go order a large pie very soon.

Thanks to Katie and Sykes for eating with me!

  • Interesting to hear about this place – even better to hear that the pizza is decent. Will have to check it out, as I’m in the neighborhood.
Just BTW, its “Brookland Park”, as in Brookland Park Boulevard – at first I thought it was a review of a NYC place!
